Aveyond: The Darkthrop Prophecy

Aveyond: The Darkthrop Prophecy

Mel can use magic and she's not happy about it. Worse, little dark creatures are following her and calling her their queen!

Mel has gone into hiding after she discovers she can use magic. To make matters worse, wicked creatures called Darklings keep popping up, convinced that Mel is the prophesied one who will build a dark empire for them.Edward, the ousted heir to the throne of Thais, who is also Mel’s best friend, eventually finds her hiding in the village of Harakauna. To her dismay, he’s brought along two professors from a prestigious magical school called Shadwood Academy. Will they convince Mel to go to a school where she can learn to control her powers?

In this final installment of the Orbs of Magic series, Te'ijal, Galahad, Edward, Stella, and Mel come together to stop the Darkthrop Prophecy from occurring. Will they succeed?

If you were to play all four chapters of Aveyond in one sit, it would take you 3-4 weeks; no wonder it was episodic. You really get more than a bang for your buck. I give the story a solid 15 out of 5; I haven't been this into a game's story since I played Neverwinter Nights & Baldur's Gate. If a novel was published, I would totally buy it.

My favorite thing about this particular chapter is how seldom I needed to consult a walkthrough, not even attempting till I was 9/10th of the way though the game. My least favorite thing is all the soul-crushing backtracking common to the RPG genre. These games are a strain on the eyes & murder on the fingers.

Like other Aveyond games, this has 3 or 4 alternative endings where Edward marries one of the girls. This part had me a little baffled, because I remember that as a joke I married him off to the Orc princess one or two games ago. ((Spoiler)) If he does not pick Mel, she really doesn't seem to give a care & ends up with Lars from Aveyond 1. ((End spoiler))

If you wait till after the credits, you will get an epilogue that suggest there will be an Aveyond 4. You also learn that despite how she looks in both sprite & avatar form, Nox is not a boy. (Not important, just a minor annoyance). Hopefully A4 will have some new music; they've been recycling the same soundtrack since Aveyond 0: Ahriman's Prophecy. (The Slayers animes did that too). It takes away from the charm of the music to hear it so often, especially when you notice that it has less songs than AP & A1.

One thing I never really noticed in previous chapters was the little tips-of-the-hat or coincidental similarities to Slayers & Harry Potter. Mel is Lina, Edward is Gourry, old Darkthrop is Voldemort, Hercules is Lockheart-Nahga, Stella is Amelia-Silphiel, Lydia is Nahga-Martina, & short moments that just remind you of something that happened in HP or Slayers, which is awesome, because I really hope Slayers & HP get their own RPGMaker games someday.
